shit just got real
this has been the longest break from writing since I began this blog—and for good reason. the first month of two thousand and eleven has made me feel like one of those before/after shots of a new president. wrinkles and grey hair out the ass—too much to do and not enough time.
Chattanooga, to athens, to california, to Canada, to Colorado, to Knoxville, and back to athens—living in a suitcase—half business, half pleasure.
her and I just returned from a whirlwind tour of viewing potential farm properties in the pacific northwest. Wheels are turning, gears are shifting, and things are moving forward at ludicrous speeds.
in the news of all news, her and I have rented our very first farm here in the dirty dirty south. our good friend boo, who has been running a highly productive vegetable operation called backyard harvest for the last fifteen years, has up and runnoft to california, leaving his farm vacant and ripe for the picking for a young farmer such as myself.
after our visit to puerto rico earlier in the year, you may recall our visit to la chakra eco village—designed and farmed by her self taught, super resourceful cousin.
well hear this: we convinced him (as well as his family) to move from puerto rico to rural georgia to help us manage our new rental farm!
this is it. our first farm. we spent seven hours straight today planning our first plantings. ordering seeds. ordering tools. pre meditating markets. thinking about harvests. planning crop rotations. what do we need to do to produce arugula consistently from april through winter? how many seeds does that take? how many feet to plant? how many rows in each bed?
my head is now mush. my eyes are sore. never, until today, has farming been so thought consuming, number intensive, math reliant, and brain emulsifying.
her cousin, who goes by the pseudonym raiz—translating to root—has swept up from the Caribbean like a tropical storm and crashed onto our red clay shores with the mighty wrath of Poseidon. tropical know how meets georgia do-how, and our multi talented collaboration is sure to produce magnificent results.
our spirits are high. our expectations are high. and truthfully, our stresses are high.
hang with us as the dust settles, as there are some serious details to come in the coming weeks.
